May 10 – Carolyn Broadhead- Carolyn’s French Connection. Picture 3 Descendants of lacemakers who came to Australia in 1848.
Galston local Carolyn will tell us about two French connections. Firstly a short talk about Dovellan Septimus Small whose name appears on our Galston War Memorial and his very interesting link with France in WW1. Secondly the story of a group of skilled English workers who produced machine made lace in Calais. They eventually left France in a state of destitution and sailed to Australia in 1848 never to ply their trade again. Carolyn’s Nutt forebears were among this group.
