August 9 – The June Roughley Memorial Lecture, Ian Hemphill – My Spicy Life. Picture 6 Herbie in his Spicery
Ian Hemphill spent many hours in his childhood harvesting herbs for his parents’ business at Somerset Cottage in Round Corner, Dural. He worked in the business for a time, learning herb and spice lore from his mother Rosemary who was educating Australians about using herbs in the kitchen well before it became a commonplace practice. Ian, nicknamed Herbie, took this knowledge and expanded on it, becoming particularly fascinated by spices and travelling the world to learn more about them. Together with his wife Liz, Ian runs a herb and spice supply business. He had written numerous books, including The Spice & Herb Bible, has appeared on radio and TV shows and has received a number of prestigious awards for his work. We are honoured that Ian has agreed to be our 2025 June Roughley Memorial lecturer.
